The Death of the American Dream

The script of George Lucas never rang so true as today while I listened to President Obama's speech playing in the office background. "So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause."

As Obama speaks to the pop culture in Fairfax, Virginia I really wonder if they listen to anything he says. "I don't call this socialism, I call it opportunity," says the man behind the curtain. In November 2008, America used the power of the ballot to put a reckless driver behind the wheel. Now Obama is threatening to drive the American Dream into the bottomless pit of socialism.

Yes, the insurance companies run the health care system, but only in part. I have heard nothing about making doctors cut their costs. I haven't heard anything about the pharmaceutical companies that get rich off of hiking prices on the medicine that Americans need. The insurance agents sometimes scrape bottom while they're trying to make a living and yet the doctors can go unchecked indefinitely? Tell me how this makes sense. What happened to the Hippocratic Oath? What happened to putting patients above profits?

Maybe it's what the people think they want, but the U.S. is beginning to sound like the U.S.S.R. The government used its own provisions to buy controlling shares in U.S. firms like AIG. Now they're putting strict regulations on the private sector of the economy. Next we'll have storm troopers, civilian rationing and a single ruling party... oh wait, that one already happened.

What happened to what the people want? When did we stop believing that we should have the right to throw off the shackles of an oppressive government? Why did the government stop fearing and regarding the people they are sworn to represent?

It's simple really. We let them do what they want. We let them set up public welfare. We let them exploit social security. We've become a socialist state that often gives the most to those who contribute the least.

People are no longer educated in the issues and have little sense of right and wrong. As long as we live in such a way, all hail the Uninformed States of Atrophy!
